Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) — what it means
HR Guides · 1 views
A Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a structured, documented plan to help you reach the expected level of performance.
HOW IT WORKS
• Your reporting manager defines the performance/behaviour to improve (with specific examples and data), sets clear expectations and written end-results, and agrees timelines with deadlines.
• There must be at least 2 documented reviews during the PIP, with periodic meetings. You and your manager sign the plan to acknowledge it.
OUTCOMES
• Cleared successfully: your manager continues to monitor and give feedback.
• Not cleared: it may lead to a training period or, in some cases, termination. In a termination due to PIP failure, there is no separate notice period — the date of the last PIP discussion is your last working date.
OTHER NOTES
• A PIP is mandatory for a performance-related exit.
• If you're under a PIP during an appraisal cycle, you're not eligible for that appraisal cycle.
If you have questions about your PIP, discuss them with your reporting manager and HR.
